Get ready for Spring

The weather is already changing. Some days lately have been a little warmer and sunnier. There is more wind about and almond and apricot trees are in glorious blossom. These are signs of the approaching spring.

We have had good winter rain over much of the state, enough to begin the recharge of subsoil moisture at our place…I hope the same applies to your garden. The increase in moisture in the deep root zone will be fabulous for big trees that have struggled through 3 years of drought.

Newly planted fruit trees will not require watering for a few weeks yet. Wait until the new shoots start to grow and the soil changes from being too wet to too dry. Keep mulches off the soil. This is to enable the excess wetness in the soil around the roots to dry out. As air gets sucked into the spaces between soil particles the roots begin to grow. Mulch your trees later, perhaps around mid October, when you want to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool for the summer.

Apply your fertilizer treatments now. Use a complete fertilizer such as citrus food, Complete D or Rustica (our favourite).

Organic fertilizers can also be applied now. Citrus, avocado, guava and other subtropicals get their 1st dose in September when the weather is a little warmer.

Quandong time is now! $39 each or $300 for 10.

Pistachio - still on special - $50 each.

Lovely Loquat – 2 metre trees - some setting a crop for $75.

Chilean Guava v. Tassiberry.

This beautiful plant bears the most flavoursome of berries. Very well suited to cool wet areas like the Adelaide Hills. Use as a border for beds and pathways.
Terrific strong plants ready to plant $30.

Perrys Fruit & Nut Nursery is open every day from 10am until 4pm.
