Walnut

Plant your new Walnut Tree before Winter's end.

The Walnut is a majestic and long lived tree that bears tasty nuts. Good grafted trees can begin to produce a few nuts in the second year, although productivity will increase for many years. It grows best in loams and clay loams of reasonable depth, say 50-60cm of topsoil. It will tolerate shallow soils but may never be a big tree under these conditions. Walnut will not do well in waterlogged or very dry soils.

Plant your new dormant bare rooted trees in winter. Plant into a well dug soil and water in thoroughly so that soil fills all the gaps between the fibrous roots. Allow the tree to settle for a couple of weeks and then add Complete Mineral Mix fertilizer to the surface.

Wait on watering until you see new growth in spring. Keep your tree heavily mulched from November until April and water deeply about once a week. The mulch is very important as it insulates the soil against the heat of the summer sun and retains the moisture near the new roots.

Allow us to select a nice strong grafted tree and prepare it for planting. This includes the all important initial pruneup.

Prepare for your new walnut in winter 2009 by digging in gypsum and compost now
